Historic Ngapuhi Headstones

What an amazing story from customer Craig

Attached for your convenience, are some before and after photos of the headstones of my Great Great Great Grand father, Kamariera Te Hau Takiri Wharepapa, a Ngapuhi Chief, who travelled to England as the orator for a group of seven Chiefs. He met Queen Victoria and also met and fell in love with the woman who became my Great Great Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Read. (Wharepapa was a favourite muse of Goldie too)

The other headstone is Wharepapa's daughter, Eliza, my Great Great Grandmother.

These headstones are over 100 years old now and are made of Italian marble with beaten lead lettering. They are intricate and delicate.

The lead lettering is extremely fragile, so we had to be very careful with our approach.

As you can see, the headstones were both in poor condition when I decided to try and do something to restore them.

I visited your store in Whangarei and spoke with you man there, who recommended Wet & Forget.

After talking to a mate about what I was intending to do, I returned to the Whangarei store and purchased some Hit The Deck also.

I used Hit The Deck first, carefully scrubbing it with an old toothbrush near the letters and a bigger brush on the rest of each head stone.

I treated both headstones twice over 3 weeks with Hit The Deck and then used a toothbrush and Wet & Forget carefully around the lettering twice again at fort nightly intervals.

Then 2 more sprays with Wet & Forget at 3week intervals, and look at the result!!

I was literally moved to tears by the result and so,so pleased with how the headstones look now.

Thank you and your team Rod. Your products are genuine and do what you say they will, and then some! My family history has been protected for future generations because of your fantastic products.

I will be forever grateful for the transformation your products made to my Tupuna's memorials.

With sincere thanks and warm regards,

Is Moss A Problem in Your Lawn?

How to Control the Moss Growing in Your Lawn

Moss is a small green plant with finely branched stems and tiny leaves which produces spores that are spread by the wind. Moss forms a thick, green matt on the soil surface but it is not the culprit for killing grass in those areas.

When you find moss in your lawn, it’s an indication that conditions are not favourable for growing grass and the moss is just simply filling in the spaces where the grass is not growing well. Determine what the underlying problem is and make improvements in the conditions to promote healthy grass growth so that the moss doesn’t continue to thrive in those areas. This is a lot easier than continually removing or killing the moss.

Check if any of these conditions may be the culprits in encouraging your moss to grow

too much shade

acidic soil

poor drainage/wet soils

compacted soil

low soil fertility

Helpful Hints to assist you to reduce Moss Friendly Conditions

Too much shade: Let the sun shine through

Moss grows well in the shade, but most normal varieties of grass do not.

If you want to make your lawn healthier, consider clearing away removable obstacles from your yard so that more natural sunlight can reach your grass.

Keep piles of firewood, bricks, or other debris inside storage areas like your garage or garden shed.

When building a new shed, think about how the position of the structure may cast shade over the lawn.

Trim large trees and heavy shrubs so that more light can peek through.

Moss can tolerate shade better than grass so plant more shade-tolerant grasses.

Shaded area with less than 4 hours of full sun per day are too shady for any type of grass to grow.

If the area is too heavily shaded, you may have to decide which you would prefer, the trees/shrubs or the lawn.

If you choose to keep the trees/shrubs you can cover the area under the trees with a 7cm layer of mulch but avoid piling mulch at the base of the plants.

Acidic soil:

Moss thrives well in acidic soils. If soil pH is below the range recommended for grasses, this encourages moss growth

To determine what the soil pH is in an area, you can collect and submit a soil test sample. Most grasses prefer a soil pH of 6 to 6.5.

If the results indicate that the soil pH is too low in the area moss is growing, you can raise the pH by applying lime.

Low soil fertility:

Moss thrives in unfertile soils where grass does not do as well so a soil test would help to decide whether a ‘mossy’ area is low in nutrients or not.

To assist in this though - fertilize at the proper time to encourage a healthy lawn.

Poor drainage/wet soils:

Moss grows well in wet soils. If the moss is growing in a low-lying area where the soil stays wet, improving drainage discourages moss growing.

Avoid watering on automatic or regular schedule. This encourages excess moisture & wet soils. Water your lawn only when you need to.

Watering a lawn infrequently but deeply encourages deep root growth which will tolerate drought stress better than a shallow root system.

While too much moisture creates ideal conditions for moss, too little moisture can weaken grass & make your lawn more vulnerable to moss.

When lawns are too dehydrated, the grass turns brown and weak. It may become too weak to respond to rain or other moisture when it does arrive. As a result, once it rains, the moss grows quickly while the grass continues to die.

Compacted soils:

A lawn will not grow well in a compacted soil situation because of the lack of air, water, and nutrients moving through the soil to the roots.

Soil compaction also prevents good drainage allowing an advantageous spot for moss to grow instead of grass.

Soil compaction can be alleviated by aeration which removes cores of soil from the lawn.

Get in a landscaper or hire a core aerator which pushes a set of hollow tines into the law to dig out small batches of soil less than 2.5cm wide.

This will free up enough space for the soil to spread out and therefore decompress. Good idea to do this 2x a year before and after the growing season.

Just be aware of the conditions and factors that could be preventing you from having a healthy lawn and whilst encouraging the moss to thrive.

Spread agricultural lime:
Lime should be used to control the acidity of your soil. Moss often grows once acidic soil begins limiting the nutrients supplied to your grass, providing room for moss to sneak in.

Use a calcium-based lime for best results.

Test the pH of you soil. Ideal conditions will be neutral, ranging from 6.5 to 7. If the pH is below 6, it is acidic, and if it is above 7, it is alkaline.

Only use lime to treat acidic soil, not alkaline soil.

Apply the lime to your lawn twice each growing season if your soil has tested acidic.

A cheaper method:
If you have a fireplace, lightly spread some of the ashes over the area. If you wet it down, it helps to make the grey disappear but it does get rid of the moss.

Helpful Customer Tips And Hints

Pre-Wash Stain Remover For Clothes
Simply, spray the stain and wash in your normal wash (not recommended for delicate fabrics). Some customer have used it to remove food stains on chef uniforms and stained collars on business shirts!

Metal Rims On Your Tyres
Do your tyre rims get black? Simply spray the metal rims only & watch the grease dissolve. With a simple wipe/wash down with soapy water, the rims are sparkling clean once again!

Venetian Blinds & Shutters
To clean the venetian blinds either, spray and wipe the Shower Witch on the surface, alternatively, spray a cloth or paper towel with Shower Witch and wipe the surface down. If there is a build-up of sticky grime, a second wipe down may be necessary.

Grease Build-Up On Your Kitchen Cupboards
Quite often we cook and cook and cook without realising the build-up of all the cooking fumes end up creating a very thick, sticky film on top of the kitchen cupboards and on top of the fridge. This is where Shower Witch can help! Simply spray, and leave for a few minutes, then wipe it off. If the build-up is very thick, repeat the process for a second time. You will be amazed at how quick, easy and clean the surface will be!

Filters In Your Exhaust Fans
The filters in your exhaust fans above the stove or BBQ are always overlooked. How often do you look up and see the yellow orange muck only to ignore it because it's too hard and too big a job! Our customer feedback is that it's easy with Shower Witch! Take the filters out, place them in a deep sink, laundry sink is often the best place. Spray with Shower Witch, leave for a couple of hours or so and then scrub them in warm soapy water. If the build-up is extreme , repeat the process until it comes clean. Alternatively, instead of scrubbing in warm soapy water, pop them in the dishwasher!

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel surfaces can be a real pain to clean! Not with Shower Witch! Use it to keep your stainless steel benchtops and sinks super clean, just spray and wipe. Stainless Steel BBQ hoods also become very dirty from cooking and general outdoor climatic conditions, just spray and wipe!

Fly Screens
Another customer says her fly screens are no longer a job she puts off doing! Take the flyscreen off, spray some Shower Witch onto a cloth and wipe the flyscreen with the cloth then wash off! Yes, it's that simply to do!

General Purpose Spray And Wipe
Our customers that have a very busy life, with children and pets running around the house, opening and closing doors, playing inside and outside the house. There are often sticky, dirty little fingers touching the doors, bench tops and cupboards doors. Just spray those dirty marks on the walls, doors, cupboards and bench tops with Shower Witch, wipe off and watch the surface come clean before your very eyes! Shower Witch is perfect to use as an everyday spray and wipe on most surface areas throughout the house.

Jewellery Cleaner
"I know it sounds ridiculous but it's true, Shower Witch is the best jewellery cleaner, ever!!"

This was a message we received from a regular customer, she was using Shower Witch to do her usual shower and bathroom cleaning and realised when she finished the jewellery she was wearing was sparkling clean. She then decided to clean her jewellery with Shower Witch! Soak jewellery in a small dish filled with Shower Witch for 10 minutes, give it a light scrub with a toothbrush and wow, so sparkly clean! (only use on metal jewellery, do not use on pearls)

Dishwasher & Washing Machine
We have all seen the build-up of scum in our dishwasher and washing machine! Simply, spray the inside of the dishwasher and/or washing machine with Shower Witch, (make sure the dishwasher and washing machine is empty). Leave it overnight and then put the dishwasher and washing machine on a hot wash cycle. So easy, so clean!

Smelly Sneakers/Running Shoes
Simply dilute half a cup of Wet & Forget concentrate + 2 tablespoons of baking soda into a bucket of warm water. Completely submerge your sneakers/running shoes into the bucket of water, leave overnight (24hours), thoroughly rinse and dry them ready to wear. The Wet & Forget will kill the bacteria in your running shoes that is causing your sneakers to smell! (Some poor quality glues may come off).

Curtains
Lightly mist the back of the curtains (plastic backed curtains only) with Wet & Forget before they get mouldy at the start of Winter. If they are already mouldy it won't get rid of the mould, however, it will kill the spores. Always do a test area to ensure that the curtain is dye fast.

Towels
Did you know bacteria breeds on wet towels! We also pass on bacteria through using the same hand towels or bath towels! The best way to sanitise your towels is to put 2 capfuls of Wet & Forget concentrate in with the towels on the initial wash, when you are washing them. Not only will they smell nice, the Wet & Forget will kill the bacteria, therefore, sterilising them ready to use!

Smelly Drains
Do you have smelly drains? Most often smelly vanity, shower, bath and floor drains have a build-up of soap scum, body fats and bacterial growth that cause the drain to have an offensive smell! Simply pour or spray some diluted Wet & Forget (1:5) down the drains, leave for an hour or more and then rinse with hot water. The scum and grime will be cleaned up, more importantly the bacteria will be killed! If you have a sceptic system Wet & Forget is not suitable because it will kill the bacteria.

Washing Machine
Spray diluted Wet & Forget into the drum, agitator and filter of an empty washing machine, leave overnight and then turn the washing machine on a hot wash cycle. The build-up of scum and dirt will be washed away!

Car Windscreen Wash
Simply place 50mls in windscreen washer bottle. Then use the windscreen washer, or if bad webbing is evident, squirt some Wet & Forget directly onto the windscreen.

Lichen On Trees
Dilute the Wet & Forget 1 to 7. Only spray in Autumn or Winter when the trees are dormant. Be aware that certain species of lichen will die on the surface and not change colour, so they need to be brushed off (avoid any overspray on the leaves, as they will spot burn).

There's nothing better than a good old fashioned road trip with the family!

We might do it with a bit more luxury these days but you still want to make sure the Caravan or Motorhome is sparkling clean before you leave. That’s where Wet & Forget can help!

Caravan, Motorhomes and Camper Trailers
It's time to get your Caravan or Motorhome ready for the Christmas holidays so you can take the family away on that long awaited break. First you need to remove that unsightly build-up of mould and any other growth that has appeared on the surface whilst it's been covered up during winter.

Wet & Forget is the perfect solution, once you have diluted the Wet & Forget or Rapid Application with the correct amount of water as per the instructions on the bottle you just spray it on to the surface and leave it.

After that initial spray, every time it rains, we rely on the weather to decompose the growth and to reactivate the active ingredient in Wet & Forget or Rapid Application. So the best thing to do is to leave the caravan outside in the weather for the rain to do its job.

Wet & Forget or Rapid Application is safe to apply to any exterior surface including aluminum cladding and fibreglass. In a few months your caravan should be looking clean again!

Awnings & Annexes
You can even apply Wet & Forget or Rapid Application to your canvas awning if it has any growth on it as well. Just roll out the awning and apply the diluted Wet & Forget or Rapid Application as per bottle instructions. Make sure the awning is dry before you roll it back up again.

Ideally it is best to l have the awning exposed to the weather for as long as possible to help the mould to decompose. If the awning is older and is in need of re-waterproofing, then its best done after you have applied the Wet & Forget or Rapid Application after the residual has washed off the awning. Suitable for all types of awnings and annexes including acrylic, canvas & polyester.

Outdoor Umbrella, Outdoor Chairs and Tarpaulins
It doesn’t matter if your umbrella is canvas or polyester, or if your outdoor chairs are timber or wicker! Just spray and leave and over time they will come clean. You can use Wet & Forget or Rapid Application on your outdoor cushions and tarpaulins as well.
